Our Story

Bandage and Beyond is a student-led initiative founded by undergraduates Raj Saini, Joy Yang, Vanesse Li, and Jane Tjandra after observing a recurring pattern of late-stage wound complications in clinical settings. Many of these patients, experiencing homelessness in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES), lacked access to basic resources, faced stigma, and grappled with intersecting challenges like the overdose crisis and chronic violence.

What does the Initiative address?

Recognizing that untreated wounds can rapidly escalate into life-altering infections—often leading to hospitalizations, amputations, and compounded health issues—our team sought to provide simple yet effective solutions. Informed by conversations with healthcare professionals and DTES residents, we developed a multifaceted approach tailored to the community’s unique barriers.

Our Initiative

Bandage and Beyond distributes essential wound care kits, offers educational talks, collaborates with local organizations, and spearheads the Beyond the Wound Media Project to humanize the stories of those affected. By casting light on systemic inequities and advocating for public health reforms, we aim to empower individuals to take charge of their well-being and ultimately reduce preventable wound complications in the DTES.
